Dhankar Gompa

  • Dhankar means 'a place in the mountains unreachable for strangers'.
  • It is situated at an elevation of 3,894 metres in the Spiti Valley above Dhankar Village.
  • Below the Gompa lies the small village of Shichilling which contains the new Dhankar Monastery.
  • The 16th century old fort monastery has also served as a prison in the erstwhile era
  • The highlight of the monastery is the a statue of Vairochana or Dhayan Buddha with 4 figures seated back to back.
