Cellular Jail

Why?
  • Once served as the colonial prison, much dreaded , housed Indian prisoners  exiled by the British Government
  • Freedom fighters such as Veer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt were imprisoned here
  • Now serves as a national memorial monument
  • A historic landmark in Port Blair for its dark and brutal past
  • Rebels from all over India, Burma and Karachi were exiled for life in this prison
  • Was taken over by Japanese troops in 1942 during WW II, and in a surprise turn, saw many British troops as inmates
